My Thoughts On Episode #1 of "STORY TELLERS"

Let me start off by telling you what this is…

Today I launched my new video series “Story Tellers.” In this series I will interview men and women who have incredible stories and are changing the world.

After each episode, I will write a blog on what I thought about the interview and what my personal take home was.

So, here we go…

Episode #1 started out with a bang for sure! Dr. Stephen Crawford is the REAL DEAL!

If you need numbers….he helps 7 figure business become 9 figure businesses! Come on somebody…that’s INCREDIBLE!

But he is still a far greater person that what his business accomplishes.

In the very beginning of the interview (link to video here), he dropped what I thought was the biggest bomb of the day…and he didn’t say it like this…but this is how I heard it…

“You can’t out think bad habits.”

He told the story about a study someone did about when McDonalds introduced salads to the menu, and get this…Big Mac sells went up 35%! WHAT?!

But it makes sense…

He further explained that a ton of people who had stopped going to McDonalds because it wasn’t healthy, started coming back because of the “healthier option,” but without realizing fell victim to their thinking not being able to out perform a bad habit.

They would pull up to order and have all the thoughts in the world about having that salad, yet see that Big Mac…and without even thinking…order the Big Mac!

I am guilty of this REGULARLY…

For me, it’s with my health. I can plan the night before to make good decisions that day, think through those good decisions that morning, avoid fast food for breakfast, then on my way home from work a drive thru will get me.

Why do I do this to myself?

Assuming that I’m not the only one…let’s talk through out loud a few ways to break these habits…

#1 - Identify “Your Why.”

For some, you may fall to your habits because “your why” isn’t clear enough. Maybe you’ve picked a crappy why? Maybe you picked someone else’s why? Maybe you’re lying to yourself about really wanting to change? It could be different for all of us!

But make sure “your why” is powerful and makes a difference for more than just you. We need that to be the backbone of the new decisions we plan to make.

#2 - Fight for Accountability.

Why do I use the word fight? Because this really matters!

I’ve had so many over weight accountability partners over the years as I’ve tried to lose weight…and guess what? Since our struggle was the same, we gave each other too much grace and allowed for too many excuses.

I have to have someone who’s already conquered where I’m trying to go and let them kick my butt through accountability.

Here’s an extreme story I heard about accountability…

Some I know was coaching a client and that client wasn’t committed to what they were being asked to do. Well, this client happened to be a hard core republican…so the coach made him write a $1000 check to the Democratic Convention. The coach put it in an envelope, sealed it, stamped it, addressed it and that client knew, if he didn’t follow through on what he said, he would become a proud supporter of the Democratic Party!

Haha! How awesome is that?!?!?! It’s about finding one’s motivation and making it happen!

#3 - Quit Being a Victim.

I loved what Stephen said…

“People are where they are because they want to be there.”

Whoa! Did that just slap you in the face?! Because it did to me!

He said whether it’s a conscious decision or a sub-conscious decision…people are where they are because they want to be there.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve played the victim card in my life. More than you would care to know about!

Why? Because it’s so easy….

Playing the victim allows me to remove all blame on my situation from myself!

Think about your last situation that you made excuses for? That victim card is pretty sweet in the moment to deflect that blame.

When people want to change, they change. Plain and simple. Until they choose to change, they blame!

Stop being a victim and watch your world change!

I hope this has been helpful to you guys. What an awesome time with Dr. Stephen Crawford!

Tune in next week for the next one. Have an awesome weekend!
